Listening

In this section of the site I will give you some tips and hints on the IELTS Listening Test and tell you how to approach each section and how to prepare yourself for the listening test.

Hope it could be helpful.

Tip 1: Introduction to the test

The IELTS Listening test consists of four sections and each section contains 10 questions which makes 40 questions altogether. This section will take about 30 minutes and you will have 10 minutes at the end of the test to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. So you can write down on your question paper.

Section one:

In this section, you will hear a conversation about a social subject, like, reserving a hotel and asking some information about it. This part is the easiest part and I expect my students to answer 10 questions correctly out of 10. There are different questions and formats that I will explain them in details in the next tips.

Section two:

In this section, you will hear a monologue about a social topic like giving information to some groups of people on how to use a library. Since this section is supposed to be more difficult than section one, I expect my students to get 8 out of 10 correct answers.

Section three:

In this section, you will hear two or three people talking about an academic subject. For example, you may hear a student talking to his lecturer about his thesis. Since this section may need some skills like voice recognition, I strongly recommend my students to be prepared fully before taking the test and 6 out of 10 correct answers are desirable.

Section four:

In this section, you will hear lecture being given by a professor about an academic subject matter. Since this is the last section of the test, students would face some challenging and tricky points. The topic vary, they could be about a research being done about the life of dolphins for instance. And 6 out of 10 correct answers are preferable.

Note: If you pay attention to the estimated correct answers, you will see that, it is 30 correct answers out of 40, which is equal to band 7 in the IELTS Listening Test.
